In this gallery you will find birds that are rare to Maine. They are sometimes
called accidentals. Why they are here is a mystery that can't be answered so we
enjoy their visits even if they are fleeting.
You will see my favorite image of each. It may not be my best image but is the
one I think captured the bird the best. I hope you enjoy.
This Sandhill Crane was photographed at Maxwell Farms in Cape Elizabeth Maine on the 23rd of October 2009.
Sandhill Cranes are listed as scarce in the East according to the Peterson's Guide.
These two Pink Footed Geese and also a third not shown here were found in N. Yarmouth Maine by Derek L. These are only the second sighting of Pink Footed in ME and may be only the 2nd sighting of 3 at one time ever in North America.

The Juvenile Baird's Sandpiper was photographed at Crescent Beach in Cape Elizabeth on 9-15-09.
Baird's are listed as scarce in the East with Juveniles making up most of what is seen.
Normal range is N.A. Arctic and Siberia with migration to South America through the mid western Plains.
This Buff Breasted Sandpiper was photographed at Biddeford Pool in Biddeford Maine on 9-10-09.
They are listed as scarce visitors to Maine and most that do come our way are juvenilles taking a detour from their normal migration thru the central U.S. to Argentina from their summer home in NW. Arctic.

This pictures shows a Ruddy Duck female and a baby Ruddy. Taken at Sanford Sewer on 8-23-09.
This is only the 2nd documented breeding in Southern Maine.
First found by Andy Aldrich on the 22nd.
This White Faced Ibis is a rare treat to the State of Maine with only one often seen each spring for a day or two. This is the second I have seen and heard of this year. This one was found on June 10th by Chuck Holmer in Biddeford.
This Mandarin Duck was taken on March 19, 2009 at Pettengill Park in Auburn, ME.
This is a duck that escaped from capitivty as no accepted wild finds of them in the U.S. are on record.
On the loose now this beauty was fun to capture with the camera.
Ross's Goose taken on West St in Biddeford, ME. On March 17, 2009.
I found one on the 25th in the Scarborough Marsh for the third sighting in State history.
Ross's Goose breed in the Central Arctic and winter in central California.
There have only been 3 sightings in Maine history. I have seen and photographed 2 of the 3.
This Northern Hawk Owl was taken in Hollis, Maine on February 18th of 2009.
A Northern Hawk Owl is a rare treat here in Maine and the United States. This beauty resides near the Artic and withdraws south as the winter begins to drive its' food sources south. In North America the southern range is mid-Canada but can vary depending on food supply.
